Gang held for selling fake army supplies
A gang of 12 has been arrested for claiming to be former soldiers and selling fake army supplies, police said yesterday.
They added that the gang, based in Jinshan, Chongming and Jing’an districts, had profited about 100,000 yuan (US$14,500) since February.
Police in Jinshan who are investigating the case said they had received a complaint from a man surnamed Qian last Saturday who said he bought three pairs of leather shoes from two men dressed in army camouflage, but the shoes had quickly begun to disintegrate.
Qian said he paid 300 yuan for three pairs of shoes and got three pairs free from the men who claimed that they were retired soldiers and that the shoes and belts on the car they were selling from — an SUV painted army green — were “top quality” military products, police said.
The 12 suspects were rounded up on Sunday from locations in Jing’an and Jinshan and a large amount of fake products were discovered, police said.
They added that the suspects had never served in the army, and the shoes and belts were bought on the Internet at 5 to 15 yuan per item.
The suspects could face the criminal charge of “swindling by faking to be soldiers.” If convicted, they could be sentenced to up to three years in prison, according to China’s Criminal Law.
