Gang held over cafe honey trap
MORE than 10 people suspected of swindling five single men out of more than 20,000 yuan (US$3,220) after chatting with them online and luring them to a cafe have been arrested, prosecutors in Jiading District said yesterday.
According to prosecutors, the owner of the cafe hired young women to hit on lonely single men via the WeChat messaging app.
They would ask them out for drinks in his cafe, where the men were presented with huge bills, it is claimed.
One victim, surnamed Wang, thought he had struck lucky in April when a mystery woman contacted him on WeChat and asked him out.
She took him to the cafe and ordered drinks. Wang didn’t look at the bill and was later shocked to find it was 16,190 yuan, it is claimed.
The woman vanished from Wang’s WeChat contacts afterward.
