Gang of 9 ‘used WeChat to run betting games’
NINE suspects have been arrested for organizing gambling games via WeChat groups.
Members of the gang, headed by a 37-year-old Shanghai local surnamed Zhou, were located in the city’s Songjiang and Jiading districts as well as Hangzhou and Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, police said yesterday.
Police in Pudong, who started to investigate the case at the beginning of the year, told Shanghai Daily that Zhou had got to know his fellow suspects online. They worked as dealers and assistants for him.
In one of the WeChat groups, where there were more than 100 group members, gamblers bet on numbers generated by dice and red packet functions, police said.
The gamblers laid bets by paying Zhou money via Alipay, police added.
Zhou allegedly profited more than 1 million yuan (US$145,000) in the course of a year.
