‘Gang of four’ get jail terms for extortion
MEMBERS of a “gang of four” who used fake pornography photos in a 2.09 million yuan (US$334,400) extortion scam were sentenced to prison terms ranging from eight to 12 years by Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday.
The 10 or so victims were political and business figures. Only one of the victims actually paid the gang money.
In that case, the gang members, mostly people in their 20s, replaced images they shot with the picture of the manager of a state-owned enterprise in November 2012. They then mailed the picture and a letter to the manager, surnamed Huang, threatening to release the lurid photos if he didn’t pay them 150,000 yuan.
After Huang paid the money into an account, it was divided into several other accounts and withdrawn from different ATM machines.
Between December 2012 and January 2013, the gang attempted to blackmail other people in Shanghai and Zhejiang Province, asking them for up to 170,000 yuan from each.
Three of the gang members also sent up to 40,000 fraudulent text messages, and one was found in possession of more than 20 stolen credit cards.
