Gang of traffickers jailed for selling baby boys
TEN child traffickers have received sentences ranging from four and half years in jail to life imprisonment for selling 10 baby boys, the Shanghai Railway Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.
The infants were sold under the guise of the adoption of children from poor areas of the southwestern province of Sichuan.
The network, including two couples, bought baby boys for prices ranging from 20,000 (US$3,200) to 30,000 yuan in Sichuan and sold them for 50,000 to 70,000 yuan. One trafficker was the mother of one of the babies.
When three of the gang got off a train with a baby they bought in May last year, they were caught by police.
Officers later rescued 10 baby boys.
In court, the chief accused, Hu Zicong, claimed that they helped the boys to find homes as good deeds.
But the court said the dealings were for profit, treating the children as goods, and should be considered as trafficking.
Under Chinese law, people who traffic women or children can receive the death penalty.
