Garbage plant blast toll reaches 3
The death toll climbed to three yesterday after an explosion at a garbage incineration plant on Thursday in Jiading District.
Four others were injured in the blast at Shanghai Jiangqiao Solid Waste Incineration Plant, the biggest of its kind in the country. Three of the injured remain in serious condition, authorities said yesterday.
The blast occurred about 3pm when maintenance work was being done on equipment that treats leachate, which is water that has percolated through a solid and leached out some of the constituents.
Leachate often contains substances harmful to the environment.
The Shanghai Work Safety Bureau said yesterday the blast was triggered by a high concentration of flammable gas.
The workshop’s roof collapsed due to the force of the blast.
Earlier reports said one person was killed and that rescue workers had pulled five survivors from the debris. One person was listed as missing.
The missing person’s body was found in a waste water treatment pool yesterday afternoon, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
One of the injured died of a brain injury yesterday, bringing the death toll to three.
The other injured workers were reportedly at Putuo District Center Hospital.
The city set up an investigation team to look into the accident and started a variety of tests to determine the blast’s impact on the environment.
An initial test detected hydrogen sulfide and alkane near the leachate treatment system. The environment around the plant had not been affected, authorities said.
The plant remained open yesterday. However, it reduced its capacity by 300 tons as requested by the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
The plant said it has the capacity to incinerate up to 1,500 tons of garbage per day.
