Gas card scamsters make getaway
POLICE are looking for fraudsters who sold gasoline cards at discount prices then fled with the cash without delivering.
Two victims, surnamed Xue and Li, were cheated of 1.47 million yuan (US$236,967) after they began buying cards from a female agent, identified as Ying Jie, said police.
Both were introduced to Ying by friends at the end of May. Ying was selling Sinopec gas cards with a face value of 1,000 yuan at a price of 900 yuan, and promised more discounts for big purchases.
Xue reposted the information on his Wechat account, and received orders from 24 friends.
He then purchased 26 cards from Ying, and she asked Xue to become her subagent, promising him 5 percent commission.
Li agreed to become Ying’s subagent after a successful purchase at the end of May.
Business went smoothly until June 23, when Ying failed to provide gas cards that had already been paid for.
On June 27, Ying told Li to go to an apartment on Tanggu Road to pick up the cards. Li told police that Ying gathered more than 20 people to the house, where she said the source of the cards lived.
After finding out the house was empty, Ying claimed that she had been cheated 4.75 million yuan, and suggested others to report to police.
Ying disappeared the next day morning, together with her husband and parents.
Staff at Sinopec’s Shanghai VIP center on Weihai Road said two people had been buying large quantities of cards recently.
It said it had never sold its cards at discount prices.
