Gas inspections after blast kills 3
QINGPU District government has vowed to carry out across-the-board gas safety inspections after three people were killed and three injured in a gas cylinder explosion at a restaurant yesterday morning.
Two men and a woman were confirmed dead at the Qingpu branch of Zhongshan Hospital following the blast.
Among the injured, one man had burns to his neck and was transferred to another hospital, while another two men were slightly injured, the hospital told Shanghai Daily.
The explosion, which took place in the kitchen on the first floor, rocked the Shuijing Restaurant along Waiqingsong Highway about 9am and blew away part of its two-story brick and concrete structure.
The restaurant is popular for its home-grown ingredients, Xinmin.cn wrote.
In a statement yesterday afternoon, Qingpu District government said it will focus forthcoming gas inspections on restaurants, canteens and other public locations.
“We will keep a firm hand in cracking down on illegal gas,” it said.
Last year, a gas company employee in Qingpu was punished with detention for transporting 100 illegally filled gas cylinders for sale at below market prices in the district.
Liquefied gas in cylinders are often used by small restaurants in suburban areas as it’s cheaper than piped gas.
