Gay held for leaving blackmailer unconscious
A GAY who beat up another man after repeatedly being blackmailed over his sexual orientation has been arrested, Qingpu District People’s Procuratorate announced yesterday.
The blackmailer was also arrested for extorting money, prosecutors said.
Wang Junwei, 23, who is gay, worked in a vegetable and fruit wholesale market in Shanghai, prosecutors said. He met Ding Wenli at an Internet cafe in August last year and stuck a rapport with him.
Wang invited Ding over to his place on his birthday. After they had some drinks, Wang asked him to stay back for the night.
But later in the night, Ding woke up and caught Wang touching his private parts. He slapped him and demanded a “compensation” from Wang after realizing he was gay, prosecutors said.
After Wang paid Ding 5,000 yuan (US$824.61), Ding extracted at least 15,000 yuan more from Wang between August and December last year or threatened to expose him, according to prosecutors.
But Ding showed no sign of ending his blackmail and even stole Wang’s cellphone from his house.
On December 13, when Ding approached Wang again for money, an angry Wang beat him till he lost consciousness, prosecutors said.
Ding denied blackmailing Wang and insisted he planned to return the money Wang “lent” him.
Wang told prosecutors that he learnt a lesson.
“Homosexuality is not abnormal or dirty and shouldn’t be treated with bias. If I hadn’t been fearful about revealing my sexual orientation, this things would never have happened,” Wang said.
