Genetic obesity breakthrough
SEVENTEEN genetically obese children have lost significant weight in the past two years following an experimental treatment focusing on gut microbiota developed by a group led by a professor from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
“This is the first successful attempt to control weight of genetically obese children in the world. Gut microbiota are likely valid targets for curing genetically children obesity, believed to be incurable,” said Zhao Liping, of School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology at the university.
The children with Prader Willy Syndrome lost 18 percent of their weight on average after living in a hospital in Guangzhou City for three months on diets to modulate microbiota.
The findings were published in medical journal EBioMedicine.
