Get on yer bike for the best of Shanghai

CYCLING enthusiasts in Shanghai can now download route maps for three tours through some of the city’s best scenery.

The first takes riders on a 52-kilometer trip though Songjiang and Qingpu districts. Bypassing some of the area’s most popular — and hence frequently overcrowded — tourist sites like Zhujiajiao Water Town and Dianshan Lake, the route instead takes in gems like Tianma Hill, Jinze Old Town and Guangfulin Culture Park, said Xiao Dan, an official with the Shanghai Tourism Administration.

The second tour is on Hengsha Island in Chongming County and spans 69km. This one is likely to be popular with nature lovers, Xiao said.

The third route takes cyclists on a 44km trip around Dishui Lake, which is far from the hustle and bustle of city life. For those who choose to stay over, the area is also ideal for watching the night sky, he said.

“Shanghai offers many options for cyclists, and enjoying the beauty of the city by bike is not only eco-friendly, it’s also good for you,” he said.

The maps can be downloaded free from www.54traveler.com. The company also offers tour options, but these are optional.
