Girl, 10, dies in fire leap tragedy
A 10-YEAR-OLD girl died after jumping from her fifth-floor home in Baoshan District when a fire broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The girl, whose name was not released, is said to have lived with her father as her parents were divorced.
He was working night shift on Wednesday and had locked the door of the two-bedroom apartment from the outside, a fire official told Shanghai Daily.
Neighbors said the girl’s grandmother lives upstairs on the sixth floor, Shanghai Television reported.
Fire officials said yesterday that the cause of the blaze and the time it broke out had not yet been determined.
Neighbors said they heard cries shortly after 4:30am and after rushing out saw glass fall to the ground, Shanghai Television reported.
Firefighters arrived 10 minutes later, by which time the child had already been taken to hospital.
“We saw bloodstains on the cement at the foot of the building and were told that a 10-year-old girl had fallen and had been rushed to hospital by ambulance,” said the fire official.
“But she passed away in hospital,” he said.
The official said it was believed that the girl had jumped from the window to escape the fire in her home.
Her mother had been on a business trip in Nanjing in neighboring Jiangsu Province and returned on hearing the sad news, said the official.
