Girl, 4, loses arm that was trapped in mincer
SURGEONS have had to amputate most of a 4-year-old girl’s arm, after it became trapped in a meat mincer at her parents’ restaurant.
Her right arm was severed below the elbow at the family eatery on Saturday, but was too badly damaged to reattach.
More of her arm was removed to above the elbow at Shanghai No. 6 People’s Hospital yesterday, officials said.
Doctors said the little girl, whose name was not released, was now in stable condition.
The accident happened around noon at a small restaurant in Putuo District.
Firefighters called to the scene found that her forearm was severed and the rest of the arm was stuck in the mincer.
The girl was rushed to the Putuo branch of the Children’s Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with the machine still attached
Unable to use a mechanical cutter as the heat would burn the child, firefighters used a manual saw to cut open the electric mincer.
Doctors at the Children’s Hospital said the little girl’s forearm could not be reattached as it had multiple fractures and severe nerve and tissue damage.
She was then transferred to the No. 6 People’s Hospital for the amputation of a severely damaged part of her arm around the elbow yesterday.
A relative of the girl said her parents had been busy at work and had asked an aunt to look after the child.
