Girl won contest, now wins case
A 12-year-old girl who won the championship of a local talent contest was compensated 30,000 yuan (US$4,764) yesterday - more than five years after the organizer refused to give her the promised first prize, a tour to the United States.
Liu Xingyue, born in 1999, entered a children's contest called "Friendly Little Angel Selection Contest," held by a local cartoon investment company in 2006. She beat more than 1,000 competitors to win the contest, the Jiading District People's Court heard.
But when the girl went to claim her prize, the organizer refused to keep its word, saying the seven-year-old was too young to go on a US tour, which the contest's promotional ads claimed was worth 30,000 yuan.
After being rejected numerous times during the next five years, the girl's family finally sued the organizer last year, demanding compensation of 30,000 yuan, equivalent to the prize.
Liu's mother said her daughter was depressed after learning her prize could not be realized.
The defendant argued the prize should be paid by a training center that co-organized the contest.
But the court said the company was the organizer and ordered it to pay the compensation.
