Gold chain theft suspect held
A 30-YEAR-OLD man has been held in connection with the theft of a gold necklace from a jewelry store in Hongkou District yesterday afternoon, police said last night.
Hongkou police were alerted about the robbery at an outlet of a jewelry chain at 1501 Sichuan Road N. about 12:20pm.
The thief pretended to be a customer and asked a shop assistant to show him a necklace. He then suddenly grabbed the gold necklace, weighing over 20 grams and worth about 6,000 yuan (US$966), and dashed out of the shop.
According to a witness surnamed Zhou, the store’s security guards might be having lunch at the time.
Police studied surveillance camera footage and identified a suspect.
The Shanghai man, surnamed Lu, was held at his apartment about seven hours after the theft.
