Gong Li to chair film festival judging panel

Actress Gong Li has been selected to chair the international jury panel at the 17th Shanghai International Film Festival, its organizers said yesterday.
Gong will be the first woman to head the seven-member jury at the event, which runs from June 14-22. The names of the other judges have yet to be released.
The actress said she was delighted to be taking on the role.
“The SIFF has played a key role in spreading Chinese culture to the world, so I feel greatly privileged to act as chairman of the Golden Goblet award unit,” she said.
Gong is one of China’s most influential actresses. In 1992 she became the first Chinese woman to win the Best Actress award at the 49th Venice International Film Festival.
