'Good boy' imprisoned

A TEENAGE branch leader of an Internet-based "society" that recruited more than 160 juvenile trouble makers to carry out robberies and other crimes was yesterday jailed for 14 months by Changning District People's Court.

Xiao Liang, 18, a "Dragon Society" member, is one of the 12 members apprehended since authorities began investigating the case this year.

However, he is still the apple of his mother's eye.

Xiao was the deputy monitor in his class and a good boy in the eyes of everybody, his mother, Jin Ying, told reporters after the verdict.

"Xiao could still have been a good boy and an excellent student if he had not met the "Crow", Wang Shen, the society leader," Jin said.

Xiao and Wang met on September 30 last year.

Soon after Xiao was made branch leader in charge of all activities in Xuhui District.

On January 7, Xiao and four companions stabbed a man who bullied younger "society" members and then orchestrated a cell-phone robbery.

Xiao admitted the crimes and said he cared little about the results of his actions.

"It's all my fault," said Jin.

"It could have been stopped if I had noticed his bad circle of friends earlier," she said.
