Granddad arrives in Shanghai to take little Alimu home
THE grandfather of a little girl who was left in the Shanghai Children’s Hospital for two and a half years arrived in the city yesterday to take her home to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
A maternity test last month confirmed that Yakupu Aji’s daughter is the mother of the little girl known by hospital staff as Alimu.
Aji had spent a week traveling from his hometown in Wushi County to Shanghai by bus and train, accompanied by his elder son and son-in-law.
They brought a letter of authorization written by his daughter, who was too weak to make the long journey.
Aji bought a new outfit for his granddaughter after arriving in Shanghai.
Police, the hospital and the Shanghai office of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region government are now working together on all necessary procedures to let Alimu be reunited with her family as soon as possible.
A funeral is also expected for Alimu’s twin sister, whose body has been kept in the hospital, before they leave.
Alimu is the survivor of premature twins. They were transferred to the children’s hospital immediately after birth, but her sister died of infection, while her mother disappeared.
Her grandfather and mother were found in late June.
