Grandson quizzed about care home knife killings
POLICE are questioning the grandson of one of two elderly women found stabbed to death yesterday morning at a home for seniors in Minhang District.
The bodies of the victims, who were roommates in a two-bed room on the first floor of the Zhuanqiao Senior Home, were found covered in blood by a nurse at 5am, police said.
The grandson, who is in his 40s and surnamed Zhao, was taken from his home by police later that morning.
Investigators found that Zhao, who has a history of mental illness, entered the home at about 3am and left after an hour.
Zhao’s grandmother was from Zhuanqiao and the other victim was from Longhua in Xuhui District, workers at the senior home told Shanghai TV.
Workers at the home, where all residents have access to emergency call buttons, told Shanghai TV that Zhao regularly visited his grandmother with his mother, and were not aware of any animosity between him and the victims, aged 93 and 87.
The security guards on duty yesterday afternoon said the gate is supposed to be guarded 24 hours a day, but refused to comment on the murders.
Visitors to the home must press a doorbell for the security guards to open the gate and identify themselves before being permitted to see their relatives, Shanghai Daily found.
Most visitors arrive in the evening, often with home-cooked meals for their relatives, but because the suspect was a familiar face, he was allowed in early in the morning, a relative of a resident told Shanghai Daily outside the government-run home yesterday. However, the relative said it was unusual for a visitor to arrive that early.
Police said no motive for the murders had been established.
