Green and pleasant land

SHANGHAI is considering including soil pollution prevention into its land life-cycle management, planners said.

The plan for an eco-friendly “Taopu Smart Town” in Putuo District is targeted as an example of what can be achieved, the city’s planning, land and resources administration said.

Members from the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee inspected part of the Taopu area yesterday.

The remediation of ruined soil and underground water is being conducted by Beijing Construction Engineering Group, Beijing GeoEnviron Engineering & Technology Inc and Shanghai Municipal Investment (Group) Corporation.

Sewage containing pollutants will go through a homogenizing process and then enter a sedimentation tank to separate out the solid matter. Chemical treatment will then remove petroleum hydrocarbon and organic pollutants.

The city has 6,654 soil quality monitoring points and 183 underground water monitoring points.

Shanghai Agricultural Commission said it is promoting organic fertilizer and green techniques for controlling insects to help to prevent soil pollution.
