Green plan for chemical zone

AUTHORITIES are conducting research to formulate a scheme to improve the environment in the chemical industry zone in Jinshan District, Vice Mayor Jiang Zhuoqing said yesterday at a meeting with political advisers.

This came after hundreds of Jinshan residents took to the streets last month to protest against reports that a p-Xylene (PX) facility would be installed in the chemical industry zone.

The protests happened after the administration office invited the public to review an environment report for its scheme of expanding the zone.

Shanghai Party chief Han Zheng and Mayor Yang Xiong have met with local government officials, asking them to respond to appeals by local residents, said Jiang.

The city environment bureau is now soliciting opinions from departments to work out a plan to improve and protect environment there, he said.

Jinshan said no PX program is included in the new scheme, but the city government asked it to halt the public review, urging it improve the environment and reduce pollution first.

Overexposure of PX can cause headaches, fatigue, confusion and nausea.
