Gremlins at play cause Metro delay
A TECHNICAL hitch on the city’s subway network yesterday morning resulted in lengthy delays for thousands of commuters.
The problem concerned the signalling system on a section of Line 8 between Shendu Highway and Oriental Sports Center stations, the Metro operator said.
As a result, trains had to be driven manually rather than automatically. In such situations, the interval between them has to be extended as a safety measure, it said.
Commuters were alerted to the problem via Weibo at 5:25am, and it was rectified three hours later, the company said.
“I was about an hour late for work,” a woman surnamed Wang told Shanghai Daily.
“When I got to Shendu Highway station at 7:40am there were huge crowds of people. It took me more than an hour to board a train.”
The Metro operator said it provided 40 shuttle buses between 6:30am and 8:30am to help people get to their destinations.
Line 8 is one of the busiest on the Shanghai subway network, carrying about 1 million people a day, or roughly 10 percent of its total traffic.
