Hacker gets lengthy term for 3.2m yuan online banking thefts
A HACKER has been jailed for 14 and a half years for stealing 3.21 million yuan (US$523,000) from online bank accounts, a local court said yesterday.
The unemployed 25-year-old, surnamed Wang, was also fined 30,000 yuan by the Pudong New Area People’s Court.
The court heard that Wang, a native of Shandong Province, rented virtual private servers to plant Trojan horse programs in victims’ computers.
When the victims were paying bills online, the programs would tamper with the payment amounts and receiving accounts, the court heard.
A total of 3.21 million yuan from 98 victims was transferred into Wang’s online gaming account between November 2012 and January 2013, according to the court.
Wang used the money to buy prepaid online game cards and virtual currencies. He then sold the game cards and virtual currencies to other players to buy cellphone top-up cards, which were also sold by him later, the court heard.
Wang then exchanged the money into Thai baht with help of people in Thailand, the court heard.
He was detained in Thailand by police on January 14 last year and brought back to Shanghai.
In court Wang said he was “innocent,” arguing that the accounts involved in online communication, trade and payments were not his, and that his IP address could also be used by other people.
The court heard that in 2009 Wang was jailed for 14 months for hacking into Shanghai’s car plate auction system.
Wang, with a partner surnamed Zhou, took control of 5,000 computers via Trojan horse programs to attack the server of the auction website on July 18, 2009.
This led to the cancellation of the auction on that day.
Wang was released in October 2010.
The court said Wang should receive a heavier sentence this time around as he was a previous offender.
