Hair care scare on 2 products
THE Shanghai Food and Drug Administration has said it will monitor Zhang Guang hair care products after authorities in both Singapore and Hong Kong said two of its products contained minoxidil, a potentially harmful substance.
Minoxidil is used in the treatment of hair loss. Its side effects include skin irritation, rash and itchiness.
The producer, Beijing Zhang Guang 101 Science and Technology Development Co Ltd, had claimed that its hair care products are made from traditional Chinese medicine only.
The company said in a statement yesterday that the products singled out in Hong Kong and Singapore are not sold on the Chinese mainland.
SFDA officials said they will test the products once a state order is received. If they contain the illegal chemical additive, they will be removed from shelves.
Last week, Singapore Health Sciences Authority ordered a recall of Zhang Guang 101 Hair Growth Formula D-2653-B and Hair Growth Tonic E-0583-D as the products contained minoxidil.
Earlier this week, Hong Kong's Department of Health urged people not to buy or use two hair care products - Zhang Guang 101D Fabao and 101 Golden Pilatory - for the same reason, Xinhua news agency reported.
Products containing minoxidil are pharmaceutical products and must be registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong before being sold in registered pharmacies under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
The company said that although "101D Fabao" is sold on the Chinese mainland, the ingredients are different.
"The ingredients of our products in different countries and regions are determined according to local requirements," said Zhang Fang, an official with the company in Beijing.
Shanghai Daily found yesterday that franchised outlets of Zhang Guang 101 in the city were operating normally, and no products were removed from shelves.
A shop assistant surnamed Zhang at a Zhuang Guang 101 store on Huaihai Road in downtown said: "All goods in our store are safe and effective."
