Hairy crab farms feel pinch as sales slide

THE central government’s frugality campaign has been bad news for the country’s hairy crab vendors, with orders from public sector firms plummeting.

With the harvest season for Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs set to start tomorrow, many farmers are focusing their efforts on affordable products for “ordinary” consumers, rather than preparing luxury packages for officials.

Hairy crabs are a delicacy in China and have long been a popular holiday gift among government officials.

“We used to get orders for thousands of packages from government departments and state-owned firms,” Bu Wenfeng, marketing director of Xinyang Agriculture and Technology Co, told Shanghai Daily.

“But this year, we’ve had only a few orders from small private firms,” he said.

The company has canceled its luxury packages this year. Its dearest product — an eight-crab package — will sell for 1,088 yuan (US$180), down from 1,888 yuan last year. On websites like Yihaodian, packages with eight crabs are available for between 298 and 588 yuan.

Since last year, disciplinary departments have cracked down on spending by officials, especially on extravagant and lavish items such as hairy crabs. The Shanghai Fisheries Trade Association said the campaign cut sales of luxury aquatic products last year by 40 percent.
