Hand surgery for Metro have-a-go hero

A YOUNG man whose bravery trying to stop a pickpocket won him wide acclaim has undergone surgery on his hand which was slashed by the thief.

Zhou Chuanjin, aged 21, had the major tendons on his left hand cut while trying to catch the pickpocket on a Metro station in the city last August.

Zhou had an operation at Shanghai Time Plastic Surgery Hospital to repair serious scarring to improve his hand movement.

Zhou, who was working as a salesman in the city, saw a man steal an iPhone from a woman in the underground pedestrian way of Shanghai Railway Station on Metro Line 3. He chased the thief, who produced a knife and slashed Zhou’s hand.

The thief was later held by police.

Zhou was honored by Shanghai and his hometown in Anhui Province for his heroics.

One year later, doctors contacted with Zhou, now back in Anhui, and arranged for the first of several operations.

Zhou said he will return to Shanghai to work when fully recovered and would tackle a thief again.

“But I would protect myself better next time,” he added.
