Harmful nematode found in city

XIPHINEMA Bakeri, a harmful plant pathogenic nematode, was found on a batch of illegal packages sent from Japan to China which contained 16 Acorus gramineus seeds, the railway entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau said.

It was the first time that the inspection and quarantine officers found this species of nematode in China.

Xiphinema Bakeri can live in the plants’ roots and damage them and is banned in China.

It is the most feared species because it can spread easily and affect huge number of plants.

It can harm the nation’s commercial crops such as vegetables, flowers and trees.

According to the bureau, in the past three years, it had discovered several harmful germs and insects in illegal parcels sent from Japan several times.
