Have-a-go heroes foil jewel thief

A UNIVERSITY student helped foil an armed robbery on Sunday at a department store’s jewelry counter in Minhang District, local police said yesterday.

The man, named Wang Sanshan, grabbed the thief’s bag as he tried to flee the scene with 14 gold necklaces weighing 370 grams. Despite the robber, surnamed He, slashing at him with a knife, Wang held firm until a second man, surnamed Lu, helped bundle He to the floor, police said.

The incident happened shortly after 8pm, when He entered the store and approached a jewelry counter. He then took a hammer from his bag, smashed a display case and grabbed the necklaces.

As staff and shoppers tried to stop him, Wang joined in and grabbed He. Police were called and the would-be jewel thief was taken into custody.

He later told police that he had resorted to robbery in desperation after running up a 100,000 yuan (US$16,100) credit card bill.

The size of the debt meant he would have gone to jail anyway, he said.
