Health pills blacklisted by city FDA

THE Shanghai Food and Drug Administration announced yesterday that it had blacklisted five health treatments because they contained banned chemicals. Such treatments are only allowed to contain natural ingredients.

"Since all the manufacturers are based in other provinces, we have reported them to the state FDA," said Gu Zhenhua from Shanghai FDA's food inspection department. "The illegal products have been removed from local shelves. Fines of from one to five times the profit made from the banned products will be imposed."

On the list were four diet treatments, including New VT and VT Konjac manufactured by Hunan Taier Pharmaceutical Co, and the Xiuzi diet capsule from Nanchang Chuanqi Health Food Co. All were found to contain sibutramine, an appetite suppressant.

The Quanli Xueyu Shengbao diet pill made by Shaanxi Yangchuntang Biological Medicine Co was found to contain sildenafil and tadalafil, both used in medicines treating erectile dysfunction.

The Banshengyuan Aloe capsule made by Xiamen Funingchun Health Food Co, which was supposed to boost the immune system, was found to contain phenolphthalein, a laxative.

"People with certain diseases could suffer severe side effects if they take these treatments," Gu said.

Officials in Shanghai detected 1,025 cases of illegal or substandard medicine, medical appliances and traditional Chinese medicine last year, 11 percent more than in 2007.
