Heavy-truck drivers warned against speeding, overloading
Police said yesterday they will set up more checkpoints in a bid to crack down on traffic violations by truck drivers.
The announcement came after figures showed that in the first 11 months of the year, trucks carrying construction waste were involved in 26,000 traffic violations, including overloading, running red lights, and failing to give way to pedestrians and cyclists.
Within 10 minutes of two checkpoints opening on Jinke and Huaxia Roads in the Pudong New Area yesterday — close to where a section of the East-West Passage is under construction — three truck drivers were punished for overloading.
One of the vehicles was carrying 3 tons more than its permitted weight, police said, adding that anyone caught speeding or overloading will be deducted three points from their license.
Heavy goods vehicles are a constant threat to other road users and pedestrians, and the situation is exacerbated when drivers ignore the speed limit or overload their trucks, police said.
Construction vehicles have been involved in 70 fatal accidents this year, police said.
“Most of them happened as the trucks were making right turns,” said Shen Ming, a Pudong traffic police officer.
The problem is that the vehicles have a blind spot on the driver’s side, he said.
Police have asked all drivers to install mirrors to eliminate blind spots and to pay more attention, especially to pedestrians, when making turns.
Truckers should also attach fenders to their vehicles to prevent people being dragged under the wheels in the event of an accident, they said.
