Held for selling information on students

A former marketing manager at the private educational service New Oriental has been arrested in connection with exchanging and trading tens of millions of items of personal contact information about students, Shanghai police said.
The suspect, a 34-year-old man surnamed Gu, was reported to have claimed making a profit of about 10,000 yuan (US$1,450) from selling the information, part of which was collected from the company’s promotional events at universities.
Police said yesterday he could be charged with “infringement of citizens’ personal information” and he faced up to seven years in prison.
Investigation started this month when police received a tip-off. They said Gu had admitted that he had sold some data to individuals from services like New Oriental as well as from overseas study agencies.
Gu, who is now in a detention center in Pudong, said he had access to all data of students studying at New Oriental’s Shanghai schools after joining the service in 2014.
He confessed he had sold “more valuable” information — of students at New Oriental planning to study abroad. Pudong police, who are handling this case, said they are investigating individuals at other companies that could be involved in the case.
