Held for throwing bikes in river
A man accused of throwing five rental bikes into Suzhou Creek has been arrested for vandalism by prosecutors of Hongkou District.
They said he was venting his frustration over his marriage.
Police found a bike tyre near the riverbank when patrolling along the river earlier this year, and later a Mobike was salvaged from the water. Monitoring videos showed a bike thrown into Suzhou Creek around midnight on February 26.
A motorcyclist was observed to stop by Qiangjiajiao footbridge, get off, and throw bikes parked alongside into the river, prosecutors said.
The suspect was later identified as a man surnamed Zhang, and he was arrested in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, on April 11.
Zhang said he had often quarreled with his wife and he threw the bikes into the river to vent his frustration, prosecutors added.
One bike belonged to ofo, the other four to Mobike.
