Help for ‘cheap’ furniture buyers

PEOPLE with a gripe about the quality of their “solid wood” bedroom furniture can get a free appraisal from the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission.

If a consumer believes their purchases are not as advertised, they can send them to the commission for testing free of charge, it said yesterday.

The offer is available until Sunday and applies only to bedroom furniture.

The commission said it is hoping to collect data about vendors and will issue a report in September.

Some firms advertise their products as being made of solid wood when they are actually composed of low-cost materials, said Wang Weibin, deputy secretary-general of the commission’s furniture department.

A woman complained after spending 60,000 yuan (US$9,600) on several items carrying the Beson brand that were supposed to have been made of North American walnut. In fact, they were made from low quality wood, Wang said.

People who would like a free test should call 56635493 for details.
