Helping the disabled into workforce
EMPLOYMENT promotion offices across the city organized job fairs and consultation activities yesterday for people with difficulties in job hunting.
About 800 companies offered more than 2,400 vacancies in 60 fairs as part of a month of employment assistance.
At one fair organized by the employment promotion office in Yangpu District yesterday, a special section was set up for the first time at the annual event to offer jobs to disabled people.
Lu Jun, deputy director of the employment service center for disabled people, said there were more than 10,000 registered disabled citizens of working age in the district and about 200 who were unemployed and with the capacity to work were eager to find jobs. About 120 visited the fair yesterday to apply for 40 places at eight companies, mostly state-owned.
Qin Yuanyuan, a 34-year-old disabled women said she was glad the fair had set aside a special area. She had worked as street sweeper and saleswoman, but quit as her legs hurt in cold weather or if she stood for long.
Qin was looking for a clerical position and Auchan supermarkets offered her two.
“They said they would reply to me in one week,” she said.
A human resources worker from the Auchan (China) Investment Co told Shanghai Daily a disability was not a disadvantage and many positions were suitable for such people.
“As long as they are capable of the job, they will be employed and paid the same salary for the position as anyone else,” she said.
At the fair, the China International Intellectech (Shanghai) Corporation, a state-owned human resources company, not only organized its client companies to offer jobs, but also provided tests and competency assessments.
