Hepatitis rates down by 90%
THE incidence of acute hepatitis in Shanghai has dropped by around 90 percent since 2000, local health authorities announced yesterday, World Hepatitis Day.
Rates fell from 83.41 per 100,000 Shanghai residents in 2000 to 8.39 per 100,000 last year, said the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission.
After an outbreak of hepatitis A in 1988, mainly caused by eating infected blood clams, which left 31 people dead and 300,000 infected, Shanghai established a system of reporting and monitoring cases, promoting vaccinations and information.
The city has provided free vaccines to all newborns since 2003. Since 2010 this has been offered to all permanent residents.
