Hijack at gunpoint
A MOTHER and daughter were subjected to a terrifying ordeal after they were hijacked in front of a Shanghai kindergarten.
Police said yesterday that a 33-year-old woman, surnamed Zhou, had just picked her daughter up from a kindergarten in Jing’an District on Monday afternoon, when a stranger got into the back seat of her car.
He threatened them with what she thought was a gun and ordered Zhou to drive out of the city.
When they reached Kunshan in neighboring Jiangsu Province, around 6pm, Zhou was ordered to use her bank card to withdraw 9,000 yuan (US$1,372).
Police said Zhou’s husband phoned her during the journey, but she was forced to tell him she had taken her daughter out to play.
Zhou managed to get out of the car with her daughter when they reached the city of Yancheng at 10pm, but failed to find help. However, the man then agreed to give back the car after taking her cellphone.
Around midnight, Zhou found a taxi driver and he called the police.
An investigation found that the suspect took a bus the next morning to Jinan in east China’s Shandong Province.
On Wednesday, a man surnamed Yin was apprehended in the city and escorted back to Shanghai.
