Hit-and-run driver held for killing pregnant woman

A MAN wanted in connection with a traffic accident in June in which a pregnant woman was killed has been formally arrested, the Qingpu District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

Prosecutors claim the 34-year-old suspect, surnamed Zhou, was involved in a hit-and-run incident while driving along Fumao Road in Qingpu on June 20.

The victim, identified as Yang, was pushing her year-old son in a stroller across the street when she was hit by the van, they said.

Yang, who was pregnant at the time, died from injuries sustained in the collision, while her son was hurt, but survived.

Instead of going to Yang’s aid, Zhou drove away from the scene and later fled Shanghai, prosecutors said, adding that he was detained in Suzhou, east China’s Jiangsu Province, on July 14.

The suspect was also wanted in connection with credit card fraud investigation, police said.

Under Chinese law, anyone found guilty of causing death in a hit-and-run accident faces a maximum prison sentence of seven years, lawyer Zhang Jun told Shanghai Daily.
