Holiday ends with surge in traffic
TRAFFIC into Shanghai surged on the last two days of the seven-day Spring Festival holiday with the number of cars passing interprovincial crossings increasing up to 30 percent from the same period of last year, Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said yesterday.
At Gaodong toll gate on G1501 Expressway in Pudong, a major path for traffic from Jiangsu Province to Shanghai via Chongming and Changxing islands, more traffic police and rescue vehicles were on standby to ensure accident incidents were resolved quickly.
Lu Shuhui, a traffic police officer on duty at the toll gate, said pile-ups were the most common type of accidents, which took place mostly at entrances and exits of the tunnel about 1 kilometer from the toll gate.
“Many drivers hit the road tired after the holiday, and in many cases passengers in a car take turns to drive the long way, which puts novices behind the wheel,” he said. “Tunnels are tough for rookie drivers.”
Lu revealed 10 police cameras would be installed to monitor each direction of the tunnel later this year to capture drivers illegally changing lanes.
For the first time, to relieve traffic pressure on G1501, police allowed drivers to use the emergency lanes from Tuesday until this morning.
Police suggested drivers with destinations in Puxi take the Outer Ring Road or the Jungong Road Tunnel of the Middle Ring Road as alternatives to avoid the crowded Wuzhou Avenue in peak hours.
The road administration bureau said the peak hours for traffic into Shanghai started from 2pm yesterday with G40 Hushan, G50 Huyu and G60 Hukun expressways bearing the brunt.
Yesterday afternoon, four pile-ups exacerbated congestions on the G40 Expressway and caused a queue of cars extending 10 kilometers at 5pm, the bureau said.
During the seven-day Chinese New Year holiday, the number of cars on the road in Shanghai increased 10 percent from last year, the bureau added.
