Homicide suspect caught on Shanghai Metro after 15 years on lam

A SUSPECT at large for 15 years after stabbing a person to death in Chengdu was found in a routine identity check at a Shanghai Metro station, police said.

The identity of the 22-year-old Sichuan Province native, surnamed Yuan, was revealed when he was questioned by police at People’s Square Station of Metro Line 2 on Monday.

Police stopped Yuan during a routine patrol in the station when he became nervous and fearful at the sight of the officers. He claimed that he had just gotten off a train from Sichuan Province, and forgot his identity card at home.

After checking the train ticket, police said they found that Yuan bought the ticket using another person’s identity card, and took him back to the police station for further questioning.

Yuan admitted he had been on the lam after killing a man in Chengdu, capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan Province, 15 years ago, police said. He got into a quarrel, which turned violent, and he fatally stabbed a man in the chest with a knife, police said.

Yuan was detained and will be handed over to Sichuan police. He said he had been doing part-time jobs for a living and never went back to his hometown of Chengdu during the 15 years.
