Hope for demolished houses

A heritage conservation team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been invited to digitally recreate a row of eight historic houses mistakenly demolished last month in Liantang Town in Qingpu District, officials said.

The project is expected to provide an important reference for those restoring heritage houses, both now and in the future, said Zhou Min, a district government official.

“We will invite restoration experts to discuss how many of them could be physically restored after they are digitally rebuilt,” said Zhou.

“We will also solicit opinions from local residents to work out the best restoration plan.”

The team will collect photos and documents from the government and the public to gather as much information about the houses as possible, and then use photo-remodeling technology to create a digital model, said Cao Yongkang, director of the university’s International Research Center for Architectural Heritage Conservation.

“We will also measure the remaining parts of the demolished houses to get an idea of the sizes of the original structures before they were knocked down,” he added.

Other historic houses will also be studied to gain insight into how the 400-year-old houses were built, according to Cao.

“We are confident that we can work out models very close to the original ones as long as enough materials are collected,” Cao said. “The technology has been used to successfully restore other historical structures.”

The team is also using the photo-modeling technology and the Geographic Information System to create a citywide digital heritage archive to assist those restoring buildings in the future.

“We will not only record the appearances of the historic buildings, but also problems experienced by restorers and the solutions they came up with,” he said.

“The information can be used to protect similar buildings and even prevent problems before they happen.”
