Hospital investigated over dubious claims

A HOSPITAL in the Pudong New Area is under investigation for a variety of alleged offenses including overcharging and misleading advertising, the district health commission said yesterday.

A preliminary investigation into suspected dubious practices at Shanghai Pearl Hospital was launched in response to comments made on a radio show earlier this week by a man who claimed he was overcharged for an acupuncture procedure advertised as a cure for hearing loss.

The commission said the hospital stated in its promotional material that the procedure cost 60 yuan (US$9.20) per needle, but in reality it charged 700 yuan for each prick.

It also claimed in posters seen in its ear-nose-throat department that it offered “the world’s most advanced cures for hearing loss,” which had a “90 percent success rate.”

The commission ordered it to remove the advertisements on the grounds they were in breach of the country’s advertising law, which forbids the use of content such as the success rates of medical treatments.

The hospital is also being investigated for alleged discrepancies between the products it uses in its procedures — such as absorbable surgical thread — and those it claims to use.

Meanwhile, Shanghai East Hospital in Pudong said it is investigating claims of alleged overcharging made by two of its patients, a local radio station reported yesterday.

Earlier this month, the hospital agreed to return thousands of yuan to people it had overcharged for registration and medical services.

It has since paid back more than 144,000 yuan to almost 21,000 patients, according to the local health commission.
