Hospital thieves nabbed

Over 30 people have been caught for stealing from hospitals since July 24, local police said yesterday.

With July and August hit by severe heat wave, the number of people being hospitalized went up, leading to a rise in robbery cases. On average 10 cases were reported every day.

Most of the people involved were in their 50s or 60s, which made it difficult to catch them as they disguised themselves as patients.

A 58-year-old man was caught by a plainclothes policeman when he tried to steal an iPhone from a patient’s bag at the Shanghai Children’s Hospital on August 20.

The next day an elderly woman found her purse missing when she was getting medicines at the hospital pharmacy. Police spotted a couple on a surveillance video who stood behind her and walked away with the purse.

The couple were caught by police in two hours.

Police found that most of the robbery were carried out before 10am, usually at registration counters, cashiers, elevator lobby and transfusion rooms.
