Hotel group fined US$15,600 for using the word "Disney" in the names of its outlets
A SHENZHEN-based hotel group has been fined 100,000 yuan (US$15,600) for trying to cash in on the Disney name in Shanghai, local authorities said yesterday ahead of the launch of a new campaign to protect the multinational conglomerate.
The Vienna Hotels Group was charged with using the word “Disney” in the names of several of its outlets in the city, the Shanghai Administration of Industry and Commerce said in a press release.
With the Shanghai Disney Resort expected to open next year, the intellectual property rights watchdog said it will today begin a campaign to crack down on individuals and companies that produce counterfeit goods using any of the company’s licensed images or trademarks.
A total of 150 law enforcement officers have been selected to work on the campaign, the press release said.
Counterfeit goods are still available across Shanghai, though authorities have made some inroads in tackling the problem in recent years.
In the first nine months of this year, the administration seized about 1.3 million fake goods in 760 cases, and issued fines totaling 7.6 million yuan, the press release said.
