Hotel shut down after diners get sick
A hotel in Zhujiajiao Town was shut down yesterday because 29 diners became ill after eating tainted food, the Qingpu District government said.
Over 300 people dined at the privately owned 89-room Shanghai Caiyuan Hotel on Saturday night, and many of them began to experience symptoms such as vomiting, stomachache and diarrhea by Sunday morning.
They were diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis and received intravenous treatment at Qingpu Zhujiajiao People’s Hospital, the district government said in a statement.
The hospital’s emergency room became overcrowded on Sunday and some of the patients had to be transferred to other hospitals in Qingpu, officials said.
All patients have been released.
“At least three families were holding banquets at the hotel on Saturday night, and many of the diners, including me, felt uncomfortable the next morning,” said one of the patients.
The hotel’s catering service license expired on June 23, according to the district market supervision and management bureau.
It has shut down the operation while it carries out an investigation.
The bureau is cracking down on unlicensed restaurants and hotels across the district.
