Huge nursing center for seniors

A 1,000-bed nursing center for the elderly —the biggest of its kind in Shanghai — is to be established in Hangtou Town in the Pudong New Area.

An agreement was signed yesterday by a local private senior care service provider, Longhua Hospital and Hangtou government.

The joint venture is for seniors with dementia or physical disabilities.

The project will include apartments for seniors, a seniors’ college, a display center of products targeting the elderly, a branch of Longhua Hospital and a gerontology research center.

The city’s civil affairs authorities are encouraging private funding and social groups, such as non-profit organizations, to provide services for the growing number of elderly people through subsidies, preferential policies and government service purchases.

“Such preferential policies will encourage more private funds into the sector,” said Hua Shan, director of the senior life research center of Cherish-Yearn Co, the local private senior care service provider that signed yesterday’s agreement.
