Human traffickers punished with jail sentences

FOUR people received jail terms from eight to 14 years yesterday for abducting 14 women and one girl in Yunnan Province and selling them to bachelors in Jiangsu Province.

They were tried and convicted by the Xuhui District People's Court in Shanghai.

Only two victims, including the 12-year-old girl, were rescued. The rest were sold for 2,000-28,000 yuan to bachelors in Suqian, Jiangsu Province, the court said.

Prosecutors said Huang Debin, Liu Taozi, Chen Kaixiang and Du Zhaoliang began human trafficking business in 2008. Huang, Liu and Chen were responsible for abducting women from Yunnan to Jiangsu, and Du worked as a middleman to sell the women to local men.

The convicts said they lured the women to travel to Jiangsu for city jobs and then forced them to marry old bachelors and divorced men. Liu even sold his own wife and sister, the court heard.

Huang, Liu and Chen were caught in a Shanghai hotel in June while Du was arrested in his home in Jiangsu, the court said.
