Hunt on for parents of abandoned baby
A local hospital yesterday issued a nationwide appeal to find the parents of a baby girl whom they seemingly abandoned shortly after her premature birth late last year.
The infant, who has yet to be named, was born three months early on November 21 at Jinshan Hospital, media spokeswoman Zhao Bo told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
“The baby had a lot of problems due to her premature birth, including a lung infection and anemia, and her vital organs were not fully developed,” she said.
“But she has since made a good recovery and from a birth weight of just 1.3 kilograms has grown to a healthy 4kg,” she said.
“She is well enough to go home, but we don’t know where her parents are,” she said, adding that the police are helping in the search.
Zhao said that it appeared that the parents deliberately deserted their child, perhaps out of fear they would not be able to afford her medical care.
“When police checked the ID cards the couple used to register, they found the father’s was not genuine,” she said.
“The mother’s details were correct, but we haven’t yet managed to trace her.”
Zhao said that based on information taken from the mother’s ID card police were able to work out that she was from east China’s Anhui Province, though they have yet to find an exact address.
The couple did leave a phone number and when a hospital official called it, the father answered and said they were planning to return to collect the baby.
However, they failed to show up and all subsequent calls to the number went unanswered, Zhao said.
“If the parents don’t come forward soon the baby will have to go into a children’s home, so we really hope they do,” she said.
“If they are having financial difficulties, the hospital will do all it can to help them.”
