Hypermarkets caught selling short-weight food

Some famous hypermarkets in the city were found selling short-weight frozen food products, the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said yesterday.

Shanghai E-MART, NGS, Wal-Mart, Metro and Auchan all sold short-weighted crab and shrimp products, the bureau said.

Most of the involved outlets were in suburban Minhang and Songjiang districts, the bureau's inspections found.

The products made in Shanghai were confiscated while those produced in Guangdong, Henan and Zhejiang provinces will undergo quality tests.

Shanghai Sanjiaodi Frozen Food Product Co Ltd, Shanghai Haitianxia Frozen Food Product Co Ltd and Zhoushan Junhua Aquatic Product Co Ltd were among the companies that produced the products.

Eight of the 22 batches of frozen food products failed the quantity inspection.

Also, a honey chrysanthemum drink made by a Guangdong food company and sold at Shanghai Century Mart and mango juice made by Yeshu Beverage Co Ltd sold at Shanghai Yilian supermarket were found to be short-weighted, according to the bureau.
