Illegal cabby gets 8 months for fleeing with cop clinging to hood

An unlicensed cabby who drove off with a police officer clinging to his hood for 30 meters was sentenced to eight months in jail for disturbing public order, Huangpu District People's Court said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Bao, was waiting for a passenger in the district at 9:20pm on January 6 when the officer, surnamed Chen, noticed Bao's car in a no-parking zone and approached it. Seeing that the driver tried to get away, Chen grabbed a car door and jumped onto the hood.

Bao ignored Chen's order to stop and drove about 30 meters before other cars blocked his escape. Those drivers when helped Chen catch Bao.

After he was caught, Bao admitted he had no taxi license and was afraid of punishment when Chen approached, officials said.

Bao began carrying passengers illegally in Shanghai several years ago, the court said.
