Illegal sex change ‘surgeon’ charged
A man who conducted a sex change surgery for a man he met online has been charged for practicing medicine without a license, the Pudong New Area People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Zhao, met the victim, surnamed Tong, via a castration chat group on QQ, a popular instant messenger, in March, the prosecutors said.
Tong, with a gender identity disorder, had wanted to get rid of his testicles for a long time.
Zhao then allegedly said he could do the surgery for 1,000 yuan (US$150), adding he “was equipped with the expertise.”
But Zhao was not a licensed doctor and only learnt some basic medical skills via online videos and books, the authority said.
Tong accepted the deal and Zhao then performed the surgery in a hotel in Pudong, using anesthetic and scalpels he had bought online.
During the surgery, Tong was bleeding profusely, he told prosecutors. He immediately sent Tong to hospital.
The prosecutors said Tong lost both testicles during the surgery and became infertile.
